|Reference intervals for blood parameters in Shetland Sheepdogs
Several breeds have physiological peculiarities that induce variations in reference intervals (RIs) compared with the general canine population. Shetland sheepdogs (SSs) are reported to be more predisposed to different diseases (eg, hyperlipidemia, gallbladder mucocele, and hypothyroidism). Consequently, a breedâspecific approach is more often required. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine whether the RIs of the general canine population could be applied to that of SSs, and to generate breedâspecific RIs, where appropriate.|
This recently published study investigates the genotype and diversity of Pasteurella multocida present in pig herds and determines the extent of overlap with isolates from poultry flocks in Australia. Do the isolates vary? A very interesting study not only for Australia.
The ingestion of pomegranates was associated with the deaths of 9 of 35 young cattle; 8 were found dead without any prior clinical signs being noted and 1 animal was observed to be weak with paleâpink mucous membranes. This case report describes also gross pathological and histopathological signs of the affected cattle and discusses the question which toxic principle was underlying in this case.
Neoplasia of the prostate is relatively uncommon in dogs with adenocarcinoma being the most common type. Nonâepithelial tumors are rare and only individual cases of malignant lymphoma affecting the prostate have been reported. The purpose of this multiâinstitutional, retrospective, descriptive study was to characterize the ultrasonographic features of canine prostatic lymphoma. Inclusion criteria were an abdominal ultrasound and cytological/histological diagnosis of malignant prostatic lymphoma.
Gastric pneumatosis is an imaging finding defined as the presence of gas foci in the gastric wall. In humans, this imaging feature can result from one of two separate clinical entities: lifeâthreatening emphysematous gastritis or clinically benign gastric emphysema. This retrospective case series study describes the clinical and imaging features in five animals diagnosed with spontaneous gastric pneumatosis without gastric dilatationâvolvulus.
Primary pulmonary histiocytic sarcoma (PHS) has been reported, but is not well characterized. The aim of this retrospective study was to describe clinical characteristics, characterize prognostic factors and report the outcome of a larger group of dogs with primary PHS. It took 11 institutions and 15 years to collect the 37 patients with this rare tumor disease - a very interesting article!
